Ransomware continues to pose a major threat to the IT landscape. This talk shows the motivation, mode of operation and (more or less bad) ways to protect against ransomware. For example, a small experiment will test how ransomware can be hidden from virus scanners.

Recently, another threat has been haunting the media: Ransomware. This is malware that aims to extort a ransom payment by locking the screen or encrypting files.

This presentation will shed light on the motivation and profitability behind ransomware, demonstrate how it works and highlight protection options. Including:

Very few users have the best precautions against ransomware, namely a healthy security awareness and, above all, backups. However, the common belief that virus scanners already eliminate the threat proves to be wrong on closer inspection: a small experiment in this presentation shows how easy it is to fool virus scanners.
